Composer Tod Machover has been called “a musical visionary” by The New York Times. He is the Muriel R. Cooper Professor of Music and Media at the MIT Media Lab where he also directs the Opera of the Future Group. Machover is known for his boundary-breaking music—commissioned and performed by many of the world’s most prominent musical soloists and institutions—and for inventing new music technologies for expanding performance virtuosity, inspiring creativity in young people, building large-scale community as well as promoting health and well-being through sound. Machover’s City Symphony projects develop sonic portraits of a place, using both “music” and “found sound,” in close collaboration with the people who live there. These projects have been produced successfully in the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He is currently working on Wellbeing of the World: A Global Symphony, bringing together people in fifty locales on six continents to make a participatory musical experience representing “the future of health,” which will premiere in Europe in June 2025.
